Bimetal Defrost Thermostat stops the fridge from overheating during the defrost cycle by protecting the evaporator. This clip-on thermostat will sense the temperature increase in the evaporator during the defrost process, and will cycle the defrost heater off after the ice or frost is melted. The most common reasons for needing to replace this part are if your unit is leaking, has inconsistent temperatures (too hot or too cold), you are seeing a buildup of ice, or your appliance is running too long.
Replaces part number ELTH-015 20583 Defrost Thermostat for GE Refrigerators is also used on Hotpoint and other refrigerator brands.
Defrost Thermostat allows for the refrigerator to know when to defrost.
This part tells the temperature inside the refrigerator so nothing is frozen but instead kept at the perfect temperatur.

What to Do if Your Refrigerator Is Not Defrosting?
If your unit is not defrosting as it should, then you should check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. These two components of the defrost system work well together. If the thermostat is broken, then it cannot signal the heater to melt the frost from the evaporator coils. This, in turn, will cause a buildup of frost. And if the heater is broken, it cannot melt ice whether the thermostat is signaling it to do so or not.
Also, check the defrost timer. If it is broken, then it cannot regulate the defrost cycle of the refrigerator. The unit will likely be stuck at the cooling mode, causing a buildup of frost which cannot defrost.
