The refrigerator defrosts sensor also known as a defrost bimetal terminal thermostat trips when it detects that the temperature of the evaporator is getting hot enough that it may overheat. When the defrost sensor trips, it turns off power to the defrost heater. If the defrost sensor trips because it's not working properly, frost builds up on the evaporator fins, eventually preventing refrigerators and freezers from cooling well. You can check the continuity of the defrost sensor with a volt/ohmmeter.
